At Broad Clinical Labs (BCL), the expertise behind our operations is powered by dedicated professionals who ensure that our science is accurate, reliable, and ready to make a real impact. In this Q&A, we’re spotlighting Wendy Brodeur, our Director of Regulatory, Quality, and Compliance, who shares how she found her way into this specialty, what motivates her work, and why she believes science starts at BCL.
What do you do at Broad Clinical Labs?
My title is Director of Regulatory, Quality, and Compliance. I manage BCL’s Quality, Compliance, and Regulatory programs, oversee policies, customer and regulatory audits, and quality systems and applications to ensure full regulatory alignment and quality results. Our work helps maintain a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement for important scientific research, as well as the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
What drew you to this field of work?
I honestly never expected to end up in quality and regulatory work. I started out in biology, chemistry, and biotech applications, mostly in the R&D world. But over time, I realized how much stronger and more scalable good science becomes when it’s backed by a solid quality system. Clear procedures and structured practices don’t just keep things organized—they turn interesting research into something that can actually make a real impact.
As I got more exposure to how research translates into identifying and treating clinical diseases, I found myself getting pulled in. It blended everything I enjoy: science, clinical applications, operations, and the challenge of building scalable systems that protect data integrity and patients. That combination is what ultimately drew me into this side of science.
What is something that you’ve worked on while at GP/BCL that you’re especially proud of?
Honestly, the COVID testing launch was an unforgettable milestone—one of those career moments I’ll always be proud of and grew a ton from. But what really makes me proud is the bigger picture: how far we’ve come overall. Our quality systems, our clinical offerings, the maturity of our processes…it’s been incredible to watch it all level up. And now, being able to walk into clinical and customer audits feeling confident and excited to show off what we’ve built—that’s a totally different kind of adrenaline that I’m always happy to be a part of.
What keeps you motivated and/or inspired in your role?
What keeps me motivated is knowing that the work we do in the quality and compliance realm actually pushes science forward in a meaningful way. When our systems are solid, the data is stronger, the discoveries are more real, and the diagnostics we support actually help patients get the answers they need. It’s pretty inspiring to feel like the work behind the scenes can make a real difference in someone’s life. One thing I find satisfying is taking a regulation and thinking creatively about how it works in our specific situation while keeping us compliant.
In your own words, how or why does #ScienceStartHere – at BCL?
Science starts here because having solid quality and compliance systems is what turns ideas into real, trustworthy results.
When not in the office/lab, what are some things you enjoy doing?
I enjoy watching and playing soccer with my kids (we eat, breathe and sleep soccer right now), snowboarding, exploring and wandering (and getting lost) with my pup, art, anything involving the ocean, and traveling.
