At Broad Clinical Labs (BCL), our people are at the core of everything we do. Their expertise and dedication are what make it possible to advance cutting-edge science and deliver on our mission to help improve human health.
In this edition of our #ScienceStartsHere series, we’re spotlighting Sheila Dodge, Chief Operating Officer. With more than two decades of experience at the Broad Institute, an Institute Scientist, and lecturer in Operations at MIT Sloan School of Management, Sheila has helped shape and scale the lab’s operations and guided strategy.
Questions & Answers
What do you do at Broad Clinical Labs?
I am the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Broad Clinical Labs. I oversee the laboratory operations, financial operations, business strategy, and general management of the group.
What drew you to this field of work?
I started at the Broad 25 years ago as a temp. contract worker, looking to gain experience while I finished up my undergraduate degree in molecular biology and biochemistry. I was mesmerized by the scale and operations from the start. I have learned so much along the way. From the beginning, the work has always been tied to a strong mission, that using genomic and multi-omic data makes a difference in understanding and improving human health.
What is something you’ve worked on while at BCL that you’re especially proud of?
Building the COVID testing lab and operating at that scale is something I will always be proud of. Our team was running 150,000 tests a day, ultimately delivering 37 million results over three years. Scaling lab workflows in general gives me a real sense of purpose and accomplishment, and our team has done this many times over the years, with ever new and evolving technologies.
What keeps you motivated and inspired in your role?
New challenges, new science, and cultivating new people.
When not in the office/lab, what are some things you enjoy doing?
I love work design and visual management and spend lots of time at MIT Sloan learning and teaching operations. I enjoy interacting with Executives from many different industries and learning how they manage complex knowledge work – concepts from books like There’s Got to Be a Better Way have been especially inspiring in thinking about how to close the gap between what’s promised and what actually gets done.
I also love researching new and exciting places to travel, and I spend lots of time building Magnatile castles, ships, and cities with my 4-year-old son!
In your own words, how, or why, does #ScienceStartHere, at Broad Clinical Labs?
Strong science requires teams who are passionate about building upon technologies, who thrive on solving hard problems, and who never lose sight of the impact their work has on patients and research. This is what we offer at BCL!
